Mealworms are a great protein source for many species of softbill birds! Those who keep insectivorous species will find mealworms are one of the most palatable and affordable feeders out there! Mealworms can easily be incorporated into an omnivorous diet as well. They are relatively small, at about ⅞" long, making them a convenient snack for all beak sizes from Pekins Robins to Rollers and more!

Keeping Mealworms as Feeders

Mealworms can be kept in the refrigerator to extend the amount of time they remain in a larval state. Quite often the container they arrive in is sufficient, however for larger quantities you may want to provide a slightly larger container. Fill the container with 1"-2" of oats, and provide a slice of apple or carrot. Mealworms can be kept for several weeks this way. In the fridge they won't eat much, but refresh the apple/carrot as necessary.
